Earth Hour-The First Global Vote for the Planet

On March 28, 2009 at 8:30 p.m., hundreds of millions of people in more than 500 cities and 75 countries around the world will come together once again to make a bold statement of concern about climate change by turning off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour. An event that symbolizes by working together, each of us can make a positive impact in the fight against climate change.

Here in the U.S., it sends a message that Americans care about this issue and stand with the rest of the world in seeking to find solutions to the escalating climate crisis. With every flick of a light-switch, a vote is cast for lasting action and solutions to the escalating climate crisis.

From melting glaciers to increasingly intense weather patterns, climate change is already impacting life on our planet. To alter the course of climate change, we must act now.

Earth Hour Expands its Reach in 2009

Cities around the world have already committed to Earth Hour 2009. US cities include Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Dallas, New York and San Francisco. They will join international cities such as Beijing, Copenhagen, Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Moscow and Paris.

Organizations endorsing Earth Hour include 4-H, Astronomical League and the National Education Association. Celebrities pledging support include recording artists Alanis Morissette, Kathy Mattea, Wynonna Judd, KT Tunstall, Gavin DeGraw, Rise Against and Jo Dee Messina, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett and Janeane Garofalo.

Teaching guides, toolkits for colleges, communities and businesses and links to Earth Hour’s communities on the social Web sites Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube, and the limited edition Shepard Fairey “Vote Earth” poster are available for download at www.EarthHourUS.org.

An Historic Event

Earth Hour was first celebrated two years ago in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million people and thousands of businesses turned out their lights for one hour. In March 2008, an estimated 36 million Americans joined the effort, with more than 400 cities and 50 million people participating worldwide.

Earth Hour captured the public’s imagination with lights going out at some of the world’s most iconic landmarks including the Coliseum in Rome and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and symbols such as Cola-Cola’s famous billboard in Times Square and the Google homepage.

Stories were featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, NBC Nightly News, Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Evening News, CNN, NPR, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Time.com and more.

One hour - Earth Hour. Turn off. Take action. Vote Earth.

Thanks for promoting Earth Hour! Another way you can recruit people to the cause is by creating a Earth Hour group on Commit21.com. Simply create a group about one action that you will commit to do for Earth Hour and recruit your friends, family, and co-workers to get involved in that action as well. When it comes to climate change, simple actions can make huge differences and Commit21 leverages social media to influence networks of friends, family, and co-workers. Check it out at www.commit21.com

  16. viznine 23:38

Yes GPC. 8:30pm, your local time.

Thats a really good cause and we do take part in it as it's well publicized by the Media here. In Dubai even the schools send circulars to parents asking us to co-operate and support the noble cause. I think we should not celebrate Earth Hour just once in a year. It should be taken care of everyday. The simplest thing one can do is switch off the items that are not in use. It can save a lot of energy.

  24. viznine 13:37

Ronda Laveen } Thanks. I'll tagged you later. :)

    Imm } So cool. :)

Deepaz World } Totally right Sir. We should do that everyday. Thanks for your comment. :)

  25. HumbleHumanity 04:54

Maybe you should all turn off your computers for an hour. Dude, the climate is always changing. Why would anyone want to stop what mother nature wants. She wants to change, let her, please. In fact she is begging to change. First hot for a while, then cool, then wet then dry.

Look at it this way. The earth wants to move around the sun. It has always moved around the sun. Along comes man. We invent a thermometer. We realize we are hot. One guy invents an airconditioner, another guy invents the internet. The air conditioner guy makes air conditioners and lots of people survive hot summer days. The internet guy is mad because he can't make any money from the internet so he runs for senate, gets picked to be VEEP and then realizes he can make money selling the idea that a scientific consensus can really help him rake in the dough.

Let the mother earth be mother earth. Let her cool, heat, wet, dry. Let her be.

  26. viznine 23:46

Awesome. Thanks for your opinion dude.

Is this for real. Climate change or global warming?

Climate change happens all the time. Global warming is not happening. The real truth is all the big pusher of global warming are either looking for a cause to raise money, or making money on people's fears.

  57. margotreehugger 14:57

    Hi Viznine,

I work in a school here in the UK. (In the cleaning department) as I go about my job I am disgusted by the amount of PC's that are left on 'everyday' overnight. I was once turning them all off in the areas of the school where I work, but the teachers complained, as apparently it takes 'ages' for their PC's to boot up in the morning if turned off. When I explain about our environment, they look at me with a blank stare. I was told to leave them on!

I hate leaving them on, because 'I' care about our environment and the world we live in. I try to help to educate some people but get laughed at in return, so I give up.

The PC's are now left on everyday continuously and it saddens me, as this all adds to our global warming, which, every person on this earth needs to address and stop ignoring.

Rant over and thanks for your post.

  58. viznine 06:54

You're welcome margotreehugger. Thanks for your supporting to reduce this problem that we are facing everyday. Furthermore i hope you make a little bit contribution by joining this global event as we can make positive impact in the fight against climate change.

    Thanks and take care.. :)
